The run

Two worlds. One boss.

World 1 · Stage 1 · The vision

A soup-to-nuts Product Architect relationship with a specialty contractor

Since Teledyne’s acquisition of FLIR Systems in 2021, Teledyne FLIR has become Teledyne’s largest subsidiary, focused on military, government, and industrial applications. To meet growing customer demand, FLIR wanted to leverage its technological advantages through a soup-to-nuts relationship with a specialty contractor already experienced in its primary industries.

World 1 · Stage 2 · Boss · The challenge

Finding the perfect Product-Market Fit

One of FLIR’s greatest operational challenges over the past two years has been meeting the growing needs of its customer base inside strict internal headcount restrictions.

To keep growing within that constraint, FLIR management decided to explore a specialty contractor relationship with an organization whose technological and industry expertise aligned with its own. Enter RedSky Engineering.

World 2

How RedSky delivered

RedSky Engineering’s multilevel alignment with FLIR, across hardware, software, compliance, and team augmentation.

World 2 · Stage 1

Architect

One of RedSky’s co-founders had extensive experience in the earliest days of drone development, particularly for military and government applications. That industry expertise, paired with RedSky’s outsourced Product Architect approach across the entire product journey, made it a strong specialty-contractor fit for FLIR.

World 2 · Stage 2

Build

Work spanned an MRP-based database tracking every component and complete solution in the FLIR product line; custom add-in PCBs for isolation vibration testing of drone components and full systems; laptop-based communications software for secure private-cloud storage of Device Under Test data; support for FLIR’s DCAA and DCMA interactions including ITAR compliance; and on-site team augmentation.

World 2 · Stage 3

Deliver

FLIR asked whether RedSky could build an easy-to-use product giving near-instantaneous visual readouts of drone battery status, on a fixed-bid basis. RedSky architected the full journey: ideation, hardware design and engineering, communications and display software, prototyping, and production. FLIR now gets battery status in roughly three seconds from a simple slide-in connection.

The outcome

Across-the-board Product Architect deliverables as FLIR’s specialty contractor

Through its flexible relationship with RedSky Engineering, FLIR is able to meet ongoing hardware, software, communications, and integrated solution demands in its growing markets while working within its current personnel restrictions.

That is possible because of RedSky’s flexible approach as a Product Architect, combined with comprehensive technological expertise and industry-specific experience across military, government, and commercial markets.
