The run

Two worlds. One boss.

World 1 · Stage 1 · The vision

A next-generation, kid-friendly wireless communications solution

Kid-friendly smartphones began emerging in the latter half of the 2010s, but Troomi’s founders felt those offerings fell short in a number of areas, not least their inability to let child users grow up with the device as they got older.

World 1 · Stage 2 · Boss · The challenge

Selecting the right partner to turn the vision into a product

Neither of Troomi’s co-founders was a software programmer, an electrical engineer, or a wireless communications developer.

They needed to identify and recruit the proper team to transform their idea into reality. Enter RedSky Engineering.

World 2

How RedSky delivered

A comprehensive, end-to-end Product Journey led by RedSky Engineering.

World 2 · Stage 1

Architect

RedSky started Troomi’s product journey by helping the co-founders flesh out their ideation: exactly what a parent- and child-friendly wireless ecosystem would entail, and how it could grow with children as they aged. Building an ecosystem that also let parents protect their children meant designing hardware, software, communications, and e-commerce that were both flexible and powerful.

World 2 · Stage 2

Build

That included identifying Samsung as the ideal smartphone partner, in part because it allowed modifications at both the operating system and app store level, something few manufacturers permitted at the time. RedSky led every aspect of the journey: defining and modifying the phones, modifying the operating system, creating kid-friendly apps, and producing a Parental Portal for tracking and managing usage.

World 2 · Stage 3

Deliver

As launch neared, the engagement expanded to pricing, distribution, and roll-out strategy, including building and managing Troomi’s public e-commerce system for phone and subscription purchases plus its online support platform. RedSky filled the Outsourced CTO role for roughly 18 months and staffed the customer support function when Troomi needed it.

The outcome

Hundreds of thousands of child users with protected access to a vetted app library

Since the launch of its first kid-friendly smartphones in the fall of 2021, Troomi Wireless has grown its user base to hundreds of thousands of children, each safely and securely using its devices and wireless ecosystem.

Troomi currently ships two Samsung smartphones running KidSmart OS, with 250+ individually vetted apps in its curated library.
